Explore the ‘Iron Marvel’
Launched in 1860, HMS Warrior was Britain’s first iron-hulled, armoured battleship. She was the pride of Queen Victoria’s fleet and the largest and fastest ship of its time
This innovative ship signalled a significant evolution in the Royal Navy, being powered by steam and marking the first departure from traditional wooden ships.
Fun fact: Did you know that this ship’s masts and sails boasted enough surface area to cover 13 tennis courts?
Travel Back in Time to 1863
This ship was, and still is, a sight to behold. During her time in service, HMS Warrior welcomed over 300,000 visitors during her 12-week tour of Britain in 1863. This tour allowed the general public to experience the ship in all its wonder and in unprecedented detail.
Almost 200 years later, we’ve replicated this experience for you to enjoy. After tireless conservation work, we have been able to restore the ship’s beauty and splendour for visitors to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
The Pinnacle of Victorian Ingenuity
HMS Warrior was the most advanced ship in the world, marking unprecedented development in naval warfare.
She was an absolute terror of the ocean, although never firing in anger. Despite being fitted with 202 armour plates, each weighing 4.8 tonnes, she was still capable of reaching speeds of 14.4 knots. This made her faster, more durable, and far deadlier in potential combat.
It’s no wonder that Warrior became Queen Victoria’s favourite ship
